ODUN increases education scholarships, holds orientation for new families

August 25, 2011 – Members of ODUN held their beginning of the year meeting this week to inform parents about the registration process for their children who are eligible for an “Education for All” program scholarship

Over 75 parents from the Siloe neighborhood in Port-au-Prince’s Delmas sector crowded into the Brothers’ Delia Primary school to listen to ODUN leaders speak about their mission.

“Do we want generation after generation of our children to continue to live in what’s called ‘the poorest nation in the hemisphere?” asked member Jean Marc Vassa to the parents in attendance. “No,” they shouted in unison.

Founded in 2008 under President Bermane Délia The Dynamic Organization for National Unity launched its “Education for All” program during the 2010-2011 school year, paying 75 percent of the school fees for 50 students whose parents could not afford it.

This year, ODUN intends to sponsor an additional 100 students spread out among all ten regions of Haiti.

Organization members surveyed parents this summer to identify the families most in need of financial assistance. Parents whose children were selected were notified that enrollment would take place the last week in August.

Haiti’s school year will officially begin on Monday, October 3rd.
